[02] Overview

What is a gate valve?

A gate valve is a linear-motion isolation valve. Turn the handwheel — a wedge or slab "gate" rises out of the flow path; the bore opens fully. Turn it back — the gate slides back down between two seats; the line is shut. Either fully open, or fully closed. Nothing in between.

That binary character is the point. Gate valves are not for throttling — they're for isolation. Specified anywhere a process line needs a clean, low-pressure-drop, full-bore on/off: pipeline block points, tank outlets, pump suction, instrument hook-ups upstream of needle valves, oil & gas service, gas distribution, sanitary lines.

[03] Types

Five gate valve types. One body language.

Each gate type is engineered for a specific service. Specify by application — we'll match the right wedge, seat and operator combination.

GV-01

Solid Wedge Gate

The default. One-piece tapered wedge seats between two angled seats. Strong, simple, reliable across most services.

GV-02

Flexible Wedge Gate

Wedge with a small relief cut allowing minor flex — accommodates thermal distortion. Preferred for steam and high-temp service.

½"–6" · CS / SS316 / Monel
GV-03

Parallel Slide Gate

Two parallel discs forced apart by line pressure. Self-cleaning, low-torque, excellent for steam and gas isolation.

GV-04

Knife Gate

Sharp-edged blade designed to slice through slurries, fibrous media, sludge. Compact face-to-face. Wafer or lugged body.

GV-05

Slab Gate

Through-conduit gate with a bore matching the line. Used on pipelines & pig-launching service. API 6D compatible.

[04] Anatomy

The parts of a gate valve.

Eight components. One job: open and close cleanly. Below — the labelled cross-section every plant engineer learns first.

Part
Function
1
Handwheel
Operator interface — converts torque into linear motion of the stem.
2
Stem Nut
Threaded coupling that translates rotation into vertical stem travel.
3
Stem
Carries the gate up and down. Rising-stem types make valve position visible.
4
Bonnet
Pressure-containing cover bolted to the body — houses the stem and packing.
5
Packing
Graphite or PTFE rings sealing the stem. Prevents stem leakage to atmosphere.
6
Gate / Wedge
The closure element — slides between the seats to open or block the bore.
7
Seat
Two sealing surfaces in the body that mate with the gate when closed.
8
Body
The pressure-containing shell. Connects to the line via threaded, socket-weld or flanged ends.

Frequently asked.

Talk to an applications engineer →

sales@icclksa.com
What is a gate valve used for? +
Gate valves are on/off isolation valves. Specified anywhere a process line needs full-bore flow when open and tight shut-off when closed — pipeline block points, tank outlets, pump suction, instrument hook-ups, oil & gas service. They are not for throttling — partially open positions cause vibration and seat erosion.
What are the parts of a gate valve? +
Eight core components: handwheel, stem nut, stem, bonnet, packing, gate / wedge, seat, and body. See the labelled cross-section in the Anatomy section above.
What's the difference between a brass and stainless steel gate valve? +
Brass gate valves are cost-effective, used for water, instrument air and low-pressure utility service up to ~200 psi at ambient. SS316 / SS316L stainless steel handles higher pressures, higher temperatures, and corrosive media — the standard for chemical, hydrocarbon, instrumentation and Aramco/SABIC applications.
What sizes of gate valve do you make? +
Standard range: ¼", ½", ¾", 1", 1½", 2", 3", 4" and 6" (DN 8 – DN 150). Larger sizes (8" – 24") and special pressure classes are engineered to order. End connections include NPT, BSP, socket-weld, butt-weld and ANSI flanged.
Can a gate valve be used for throttling? +
No — and don't. A gate valve operated partially open will vibrate, erode the seat surfaces, and shorten its service life. For throttling, specify a globe valve, control valve or needle valve. Use the gate valve for what it does best: fully open or fully closed.
Are ICCL gate valves NACE / sour-service compliant? +
Yes. NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 compliant materials are available across all gate valve types — typical for Aramco upstream, sour gas and offshore service. Full PMI testing and 3.2 documentation supplied for sour-service projects.
What's the typical lead time? +
Standard SS316 / brass / CS gate valves with NPT or BSP ends: ex-stock to 1 week from our Jubail facility. Exotic alloys (Monel, Hastelloy, Duplex), special pressure classes or 3.2 documentation: 4–6 weeks.
Can I download a gate valve catalogue / PDF? +
with parts lists, pressure–temperature ratings and dimensional drawings. Sent within 24 hours.
